Frequency Analysis in Digital Forensics

Frequency analysis in digital forensics identifying patterns in calls, messages, app use and website activity

Frequency Analysis in Digital Forensics

A single call, message or website visit may reveal very little on its own. However, the pattern it forms over time can help tell a much bigger story.

This is where frequency analysis comes in. Frequency analysis allows digital forensic investigators to examine how often activity occurs, when patterns change, and whether unusual spikes or gaps appear around a significant date or event.

By looking beyond individual pieces of evidence, it can provide valuable context and help paint a fuller picture of the circumstances under investigation.

What is Frequency Analysis in Digital Forensics?

In simple terms, frequency analysis looks for patterns in digital activity.

Depending on the evidence available, investigators may examine:

  • How often calls are made or received
  • The frequency of messages between individuals
  • The intervals between calls or communications
  • How regularly an application is opened
  • How frequently particular websites are visited
  • Changes in internet or device activity
  • The occurrence of relevant words or phrases

This information can then be mapped over time and considered alongside allegations, significant dates and other available evidence.

Frequency analysis is an extension of wider digital forensic services, helping investigators understand not only what happened on a device, but how activity changed over time.

How can Frequency Analysis Help an Investigation?

An individual item of digital evidence rarely tells the complete story.

For example, a single call between two people may confirm that contact occurred, but it does not show whether that contact was unusual. Examining the wider communication history may reveal that the individuals spoke regularly, that contact increased sharply during a particular period, or that communication stopped following an important event.

Frequency analysis can help establish a baseline of usual activity and compare it with the period under examination.

This may reveal:

  • An increase or decrease in communication
  • Changes in the timing or frequency of contact
  • Repeated use of a particular application
  • Increased visits to certain websites
  • Recurring or escalating patterns of activity
  • Activity that remains consistent with an established pattern.

Where calls, messages and application usage are relevant, the analysis may form part of a wider mobile phone forensic investigation.

The purpose is not simply to provide a count. It is to understand what that activity means when viewed in context.

Supporting or Challenging an Account

Frequency analysis can help assess whether digital evidence is consistent with what has been alleged.

In a case involving persistent or unwanted communication, for example, investigators may examine how often the parties communicated, whether contact was one-sided or mutual and whether the pattern changed around a relevant date.

The findings may support an account, challenge it, or show that the circumstances are more complex than first presented.

This means frequency analysis can be relevant across criminal investigations, civil disputes, harassment allegations, family law matters, workplace investigations and cases involving disputed communications.

Its role is not to favour one interpretation. It is to provide an objective account of what the available data shows.

What Can Frequency Analysis Not Prove?

Patterns within digital data can be easy to overstate or misunderstand.

An experienced digital forensic investigator can explain what the findings demonstrate, identify their limitations and present the results in a clear and proportionate way.

Where required, findings may also be explained as part of an expert witness service.

Frequency Analysis at CYFOR

Frequency analysis is available as an extension of CYFOR’s digital forensic services.

Our investigators can examine patterns within calls, messages, application usage, website visits and other forms of digital activity to help instructing parties understand how behaviour changed over time.

The significance of digital evidence may lie not only in what an individual message, call or online action contains, but also in the wider pattern it forms.
